2020-2021 Supreme Court Fellows


June 16, 2020 – The Supreme Court Fellows Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Alsaden, Allison A. Bruff, Kathleen Foley, and Hannah M. Solomon-Strauss as the 2020-2021 Supreme Court Fellows. These four individuals were selected as part of a highly competitive national process, culminating with interviews by the Commission in Washington, D.C. Each Fellow will serve a one-year term beginning in September 2020.


Sarah Alsaden
SARAH ALSADEN is the 2020-2021 Fellow assigned to the Federal Judicial Center, the education and research agency for the federal courts. Ms. Alsaden joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, where she clerked for the Honorable Algenon L. Marbley. Prior to her clerkship, Ms. Alsaden served as an Associate at Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio. Ms. Alsaden earned a B.A., with high distinction, in Political Science and English from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was a Contributing Editor of the Michigan Law Review.

Allison A. Bruff
ALLISON A. BRUFF is the 2020-2021 Fellow assigned to the United States Sentencing Commission, the agency responsible for establishment of sentencing policies and practices for the federal courts. Ms. Bruff joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from her position as the rules law clerk to the Honorable David G. Campbell, United States District Judge and Chair of the Judicial Conference Standing Committee on the Rules of Practice and Procedure. She previously clerked for the Honorable Julia Smith Gibbons of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Ms. Bruff earned a B.A., with distinction, in History from Rhodes College and a J.D., with highest distinction, from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where she was an Executive Cases Editor of the Mississippi Law Journal  and president of the student body.

L. Kathleen Foley
KATHLEEN FOLEY is the 2020-2021 Fellow assigned to the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the central support entity for the Judicial Branch. Ms. Foley joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where she clerked for the Honorable Robert L. Wilkins. She previously clerked for the Honorable Alan C. Kay of the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. Ms. Foley earned a B.A. in English from Pomona College and a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law, where she was a Senior Editor of the UCLA Law Review  and graduated first in her class. Prior to law school, Ms. Foley worked as a bus operator for AC Transit, serving the San Francisco Bay Area.

Hannah M. Solomon-Strauss
HANNAH M. SOLOMON-STRAUSS is the 2020-2021 Fellow assigned to the Supreme Court of the United States, where she will serve in the Office of the Counselor to the Chief Justice. Ms. Solomon-Strauss joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, where she clerked for the Honorable Jane Kelly. She previously clerked for the Honorable Algenon L. Marbley of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Ms. Solomon-Strauss earned a B.A., with high distinction, in Political Science from Haverford College and an M.Phil. in International Security Studies from the University of St Andrews. She earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was on the Symposium Committee of the International Law Journal  and was an Article Selection Editor of the Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review.
