Judith Gaskell, assistant professor and director of the DePaul College of Law, Rinn Law Library, has been named the new librarian of the Supreme Court of the United States. Gaskell will be the 10th librarian of the Court, and the third woman to hold the position. She will replace Shelley Dowling, who retired from the Court after nearly 15 years of service. Gaskell is expected to assume her new duties in August.

Gaskell comes to the Court after serving 20 years as the director of DePaul's Rinn Law Library, where she was responsible for the overall management of over 350,000 volumes and a staff of 7 professional librarians, 12 full-time support staff and 20 student and part-time employees. She planned a major addition to and complete renovation of the library space in 1994, including a networked personal computer lab serving 1,000 law students. She was the co-administrator of the university-wide online Endeavor Library System, and taught advanced legal research. Before her career at DePaul, Gaskell worked at the University of Chicago Law Library for six years, starting as a reference librarian in 1977 and serving as an associate law librarian in 1983 before becoming the director of Rinn Law Library at DePaul. She served as the librarian in the law firm of Sonnenschein, Carlin, Nath and Rosenthal in Chicago from 1974-1976.

Gaskell earned her Bachelors degree at Carleton College in 1967, her Masters degree at the University of Chicago in 1975, and her J.D. at DePaul University College of Law in 1980.
