2018-2019 Supreme Court Fellows


JUNE 12, 2018—The Supreme Court Fellows Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Lilia Alvarez, Elizabeth H. Jones, L. Raymond Sun, and Abigail B. Willie as the 2018-2019 Supreme Court Fellows. These four individuals were selected as part of a highly competitive national process, culminating with interviews by the Commission in Washington, D.C. Each Fellow will serve a one-year term beginning in September 2018.


Lilia Alvarez
LILIA ALVAREZ is the 2018-2019 Fellow assigned to the Supreme Court of the United States, where she will serve in the Office of the Counselor to the Chief Justice. From 2014 to 2016, Ms. Alvarez served as Presiding Judge of the Guadalupe Municipal Court in the Town of Guadalupe, Arizona. She was most recently Legal Director of the Central American Resource Center in Washington, D.C. Ms. Alvarez earned a B.A. in Psychology and an M.S. in Mexican American Studies and Public Health from the University of Arizona. She earned her J.D. from Phoenix School of Law.

Elizabeth H. Jones
ELIZABETH H. JONES is the 2018-2019 Fellow assigned to the Federal Judicial Center, the education and research agency for the federal courts. Ms. Jones joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York, where she clerked for the Honorable Elizabeth S. Stong. Ms. Jones earned a B.S., with highest distinction, in Business Administration from Walla Walla University. She earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was a Contributing Editor of the Michigan Law Review.

L. Raymond Sun
L. RAYMOND SUN is the 2018-2019 Fellow assigned to the United States Sentencing Commission, the agency responsible for establishment of sentencing policies and practices for the federal courts. Mr. Sun joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States District Court for the District of Vermont, where he clerked for the Honorable Geoffrey W. Crawford. He previously clerked for the Honorable Peter W. Hall of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and also served clerkships for the Superior Court of Vermont and to the Honorable Arthur R. Barcinas of the Judiciary of Guam. Mr. Sun earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law.

Abigail B. Willie
ABIGAIL B. WILLIE is the 2018-2019 Fellow assigned to the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the central support entity for the Judicial Branch. Ms. Willie joins the Supreme Court Fellows Program from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, from which she will be on sabbatical from her appointment as a career law clerk to the Honorable Charles E. Rendlen, III. Earlier in her career, Ms. Willie spent several years in private practice in Dallas, Texas, and served clerkships to the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and to the Honorable George P. Kazen of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Ms. Willie earned a B.A., with honors, in English from the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a J.D., with honors, from Southern Methodist University School of Law, where she was Associate Managing Editor of the Southern Methodist University Law Review.
