“A Halved Match”: McKenna v. Harlan (1907)

Many Supreme Court Justices have been known to unwind by playing a round of golf. Justice Joseph McKenna (serving on the Court from 1898 to 1925) was a regular on the fairways after being introduced to the game by Justice John Marshall Harlan (serving on the Court from 1877 to 1911). They played together frequently at the Chevy Chase Club and newspapers reported that in 1907, in honor of Harlan’s 30th anniversary on the Court, the two Justices held “a hotly contested game” which ended in a tie.
