90th Anniversary: Rolling out the Red Carpet

October 7, 2025, marks the 90th anniversary of the ceremonial opening of the new Supreme Court Building. Construction began in 1931 and the building’s inner furnishings were some of the last elements to be completed. This photograph, taken on October 3, 1935, shows that the building’s interior décor was still in the process of being installed a mere four days before the start of the 1935 Term. And while no red carpet was actually rolled out, over 50 carpets and rugs were used to furnish the Court’s various offices, dining rooms, and reception spaces.
