Ethan V. Torrey has been named the new Legal Counsel of the Supreme Court of the United States. He will replace Scott S. Harris, who became Clerk of the Court in September 2013. Mr. Torrey will assume his duties on January 6, 2014.

            The Court's Legal Office, established in 1973, provides support to the Justices on a variety of case-related issues and legal services for the Court as an institution.

            Mr. Torrey comes to the Court from the law firm of Choate Hall & Stewart LLP in Boston, where he is a partner specializing in complex business litigation. Before joining Choate, he was a litigation associate at Ropes & Gray LLP. From 2005 to 2006, Mr. Torrey served as special assistant district attorney in Middlesex County, MA. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable Leonard I. Garth of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the Honorable Mark L. Wolf of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

            Mr. Torrey earned his B.A. (cum laude) at the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, his M.A. at Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1996, and his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1999.
