The Supreme Court of the United States will honor the memory of the late Justice John Paul Stevens on Monday, May 2, with a meeting of the Supreme Court’s Bar, followed by a special sitting of the Court.
The Bar meeting – at 1:45 p.m. in the Upper Great Hall – will feature remarks by the Honorable Elizabeth B. Prelogar, Solicitor General of the United States; the Honorable David J. Barron, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit; the Honorable Damian Williams, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; the Honorable Corinne A. Beckwith, Judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals; Professor Eduardo M. Peñalver, President of Seattle University; Mr. Charles S. “Skip” Paul, Senior Advisor to Centerview Partners; and Ms. Hannah Mullen, Clinical Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center. Chief Judge Barron will serve as chair of the meeting. At the meeting’s conclusion, Bar members are expected to adopt a commemorative resolution. Ms. Teresa Wynn Roseborough, General Counsel of The Home Depot, will move the resolution. Chief Judge Barron, Mr. Williams, Prof. Peñalver, Judge Beckwith, Mr. Paul, and Ms. Roseborough all clerked for Justice Stevens. Ms. Mullen is one of Justice Stevens’ grandchildren. The Bar meeting will be streamed live on the Court’s website, www.supremecourt.gov.
A Special Session of the Court will be held in the Courtroom at 3 p.m. Solicitor General Prelogar and the Honorable Merrick B. Garland, Attorney General of the United States, will address the Court. Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., will respond on behalf of the Court. Attendance at the memorial sitting and meeting of the Bar is by invitation.
